Memorial Day has come and gone. I attended the services at Ocean Beach on Fire Island New York. The parade was small, the crowd was large. The veterans of different branches all came to attention and saluted the flag. Many in the crowd wiped a tear from their eyes as they remembered loved ones who are no longer with us that served. The Mayor's speech was not the most eloquent I have heard, but it was one of the most sincere. The rifles were fired in salute and taps was played.
We still have over one hundred thousand men and women at arms, in the battle zone. We do not know what the future holds and there are many hot spots around the globe. It would be nice to imagine a Memorial Day where no more names are added to the lists of soldiers lost.
